Sports Injuries

Sports and physical activity place extra stress on your feet and ankles.

Whether you’re a runner, student athlete, or simply staying active, overuse and sudden injuries can lead to pain and limited movement. At Central Iowa Foot Clinic PC, we evaluate sports-related injuries and recommend treatment to help you recover and return to activity safely.

Common Sports Injuries We Treat

Plantar Fasciitis

A leading cause of heel pain, plantar fasciitis is an overuse injury that affects the band of tissue along the bottom of the foot. It is especially common in runners and people who spend long hours on their feet.

Sesamoiditis

The sesamoids are two small bones located under the ball of the foot. Sesamoiditis is inflammation in this area and is usually caused by repeated pressure or overuse.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis is inflammation of a tendon. Two common types include:

  • Achilles Tendinitis – Affects the tendon at the back of the heel that connects your calf muscles to your foot.
  • Peroneal Tendinitis – Affects the tendons that run along the outside of the ankle.
Both conditions are often caused by overuse and are common in active individuals.

Fractures

A fracture is a broken bone. The foot has 26 bones, and the ankle has three, so fractures can occur in many areas. Some happen suddenly from a fall or awkward landing. Others develop over time due to repeated stress.

Stress fractures are small cracks in the bone that often affect the forefoot and are common in runners and athletes.

Calcaneal Apophysitis (Sever’s Disease)

This condition is inflammation of the growth plate in the heel. It most often affects children between the ages of 8 and 14 who are active in sports.

When to Seek Care

If pain is affecting your performance, limiting your activity, or not improving with rest, it’s time for an evaluation. Early care can help prevent more serious problems and support proper healing.
